What is Keweenaw Mesh?

Keweenaw Mesh is a not-for-profit group of people that aim to deliver a secure, decentralized and dependable messaging network using MeshCore technology. We promote this mesh network across the Keweenaw, publish information and how-tos, and participate with Michigan Mesh members in order to provide the best product and configuration recommendations that the technology has to offer.

Who we are

We are voluntary participants. Nobody here is selling you a subscription or anything else. The equipment is entirely yours.

What we do

  • Explain MeshCore in the easiest way for any technical skill level to understand.
  • Publish how-tos: how to get up and running, how to host a repeater and much more.
  • Share news and information when coverage and technology changes.
  • Focus on improving the mesh in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties in the U.P. of Michigan.

Why we care

  • Security - The code that creates the software is open for anyone to inspect and improve.
  • Privacy - Messages are encrypted and cannot be viewed when routing through the mesh.
  • Preparedness - The repeaters do not rely on any other infrastructure such as the power grid or cellular.
  • Decentralization - Because not one person or company owns the code or software, it cannot be taken away or changed to a paid service.

What we don't do

  • We don't create rules or police the use of the network. We only manage use and access to the extent that we prevent abuse and protect the usability and reliability of the network. Bots are allowed on the network. Bots that are intended to flood the network with useless traffic, annoy or to intimidate will be blocked, located and dealt with accordingly.
  • We don't promise coverage. Just like cellular, your ability to connect is affected by too many unpredictable variables.
  • We can't promise availability. People are free to install repeaters, but they are also free to remove them.
  • We don't give things away. We may choose to install a repeater but reserve the right to upgrade, manage, maintain, replace or remove it. We work with hosts to form a reasonable agreement that makes everyone happy.
  • We don't pay rent for repeater hosting. Since this is work performed that doesn't generate income, we have no way of paying rent. Since this can benefit participating first responders and provide emergency communications for anyone within coverage, we believe that the project is worth hosting without monetary cost.
